WE ARE SCREWED, FOR NOW

Last night, I read an article by Kevin Drum in Mother Jones magazine, and it looks like we are screwed, for now and the immediate future:

The unions lost their power over the last 20 or 30 years, and the rich hold all the cards. They own both parties and most if not all the big media.

The only chance we -- artists, intellectuals, workers and the middle class -- have for equality and influence is through alternative media, like Mother Jones and AlterNet, and a few other outlets and websites, to which no one pays attention but lefties.

Seeking out the truth is way too much work for the masses. They don't know, and they don't care. They have not been educated to understand what's going on and to care. All they care about, I think, is putting food on the table and buying a flat-screen TV so they can relax, watch sports and maybe watch Charlie Sheen rant and rave.

We are lost in the wilderness howling in the wind and crying in the snow. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The only hope I see, going forward, is for us to do what the Republicans did 30 years ago: Go local. Try to elect progressive Democrats to every school board, city council, state assembly, state senate, and U.S. House and Senate, up the ladder and across the country.

Then we have a chance. It is not going to be easy.
